Work in a fabulous environment
The day-to-day running of My London Works puts us in front of exciting and progressive businesses on a regular basis. However, being exciting and progressive brings responsibilities with it, and expectations run high – not only in relation to the product or service the business supplies, but to a whole load of other areas too. OUR concern is always “how do the employees feel about this business?” and “what do the hardworking individuals gain by working for this company?”
Our search for progressive companies always takes us on a colourful road, literally bursting with ideas, schemes, projects and rewards that keep employees motivated, inspired and happy. We see the other side too – disgruntled, disenfranchised and disenchanted employees struggling to find the positives in their daily life. We say that’s not an OK way to live when other better options are around for the taking.
“My London Works really is all about working in a fabulous environment – one that fits around our chosen lifestyle like a glove. Does yours?”
Ours isn’t a members club, an elite gathering or a clique, it’s for EVERYBODY who wants to make life and work WORTH working for. The fact that we’re in London, capital of the UK makes this a great place to throw the stone in and start creating ripples. The journey from taking a rather old-school business and and modernising it (i.e making it fabulous) doesn’t happen overnight, but equally it doesn’t have to be a treacherous road. Making the workplace a great place to be is actually pretty fun.
Why not take a step towards fabulous by adding some employee-centric joys to your work environment? If you’re an employee, take these ideas, run with them and make change happen by talking to your boss, line manager or HR department. Ask to be heard, do some homework and set a good case for positive change. The fact is, as we regularly say, happy and fulfilled employees work harder, better and stay longer.
Check out these starter ideas from our recent investigations and see what might work for YOUR company.
ENCOURAGE HEALTH AND FITNESS
The team at UKFAST get free exercise classes, netball and running clubs, a purpose built gym, and free fruit.
Teensy bit jealous? Make it happen!
GIVE IT AWAY!
If you work for Ben and Jerry’s, you get to take 3 pints of ice-cream away with you every day (just don’t eat it all yourself).
TIME FOR HOLIDAY
Hubspot offer unlimited holidays to employees. Sounds crazy? Not if the work ethos is driven by results rather than time spent in the office. Change your mindset and it makes sense.
As for Transferwise, they take all employees away on an all-expenses-paid company holiday every year! Bonding with new friends over leisure time? It’s known to be good for the soul.
NEW BABY LEAVE
Our friends across the pond are doing something right. The guys at Yumbrands have increased their paid parental leave for up to 18 weeks.
The White Company finance team hosted a culture day buffet, where each member of the team brought in food that represented their culture. How great is that for team building?
FRIDAY IS OFFICIALLY THE WEEKEND
Summer hours? Nah, our sister company Goodman Masson has that all year round (and so do we). Every Friday we finish at 3.30. Friday is officially weekend anyway, isn’t it?
IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO CELEBRATE SOMETHING
Easter, Eurovision, Valentines. Celebrate them all. Topshop employees get to stop work and concentrate on making pancakes on pancake day, and so should everyone else!
The software company Huddle give employees a £5,000 joining bonus when a new person joins the team. They call it a ‘huddle cuddle’ (bless).
THROW IN A LITTLE BIT OF LOVE
Brewdog are crazy about two things – beer and dogs. They give employees a week’s worth of ‘paw-ternity’ leave when they get a new dog.
These are just for starters. Start small and add to the repertoire. Being fabulous is nothing to be afraid of!
